DOWNLOAD: SAFE – Twenty Years On + Rewards Remix

SAFE is just Chris Edley, multi-media artist and apparent poultry enthusiast. Story goes that after living in New York, doing art for all the MGMT videos and even co-directing Saul Williams' "Convict Colony" clip, dude went broke and moved back to the East Bay, where he made the SAFE album in a basement with limited means. "Twenty Years On" definitely sounds minimalist–really it's just a flotilla of keys and his voice, which is surprisingly soft (the photo gave us different vibes)–and the remix Aaron Pfenning of Chairlift did under the name Rewards adds little more than a beat and some sunrise synths. They both sound like gorgeous comedown lullabies, though, and an accompanying video is after the break for extended vibery.

The eponymous SAFE album is due out soon on cassette, MP3, and limited edition VHS (seriously) through Greedhead Entertainment, the label run by Das Racist and Portland's Lasercave.

DOWNLOAD: Title Tracks – Every Little Bit Hurts

Drummers often have what I like to call "the frontman complex." I know this because I am one and used to suffer from it. It can lead to ill-advised dalliances with things like songwriting and singing and playing guitar, which can lead to awful things like this. Sometimes it works, though, like when Q And Not U (sadly) disbanded and drummer John Smith started writing songs in a band called Georgie James. He's since moved on to a solo project called Title Tracks, which will release an album, It Was Easy, on February 23 through Ernest Jenning. "Every Little Bit Hurts" is its sharp, verbose, insanely catchy opener, fitted with accelerating tambourine runs and manimal drum fills. We're calling it a week right...now.

DOWNLOAD: The Tallest Man On Earth – King Of Spain

(Photo: Chris La Putt)

Swedish-born, American-sounding folkie The Tallest Man On Earth inked a deal with Dead Oceans for his new album, The Wild Hunt, and, perhaps in an effort to further confuse us about his heritage, unleashed this freebie about an ambitious, gallivanting Spaniard. Musically, it's still just dude and his guitar, simple and untainted, like he was already playing and someone just thought it wise to drop a mic down in front of him.

The Wild Hunt arrives on April 13.

DOWNLOAD: Marina And The Diamonds – I Am Not A Robot (Penguin Prison Remix)

(Photo: Bjorn Iooss)

If there was anything fresh left in the sexed-up, red-lit and satin-sheeted 70s catchphrase catalogue, we'd totally use it here to our clever advantage. 'Cause this is some funky shit! Penguin Prison, our favorite Holy Ghost! bro, is gearing up for an enormous year after his first single Animal, Animal whipped the hearts and loins of UK clubkids into a pattering frenzy. Below he deftly massages Marina & The Diamonds into submission and it feels great. Just great.

RCRD OF THE DAY: M.A.N.D.Y. Vs. Booka Shade – Donut

Already established scions of Germany's tech-house crown, Get Physical's M.A.N.D.Y. and Booka Shade linked up in 2008 for this particularly unfurling beat odyssey, though it's just now getting a re-release with versions from Boy 8-Bit, Logistics, Ben Hoo, James Talk, and Gui Boratto. The original still sounds super incisive, a convergence of rubber band synths and harpooning drums, all of it inching towards some (eventually unattainable, at least in these seven or so minutes) reverie. Just as the best non-peak-time send-ups should be.

The full "Donut" re-release is out now via Living The Dream.

DOWNLOAD: Psychobuildings – Paradise

Every once in a while you find, as you're stumbling around MySpace looking for the next Beatles, something that's just undeniably great. Psychobuildings isn't the next Beatles - "Paradise" picks up the trail later, taking DNA from The Cure and Talking Heads and rinsing it in a psychedelic, glo-fi surf. It does fall into the 'undeniably great' category, however, so give it a whirl. Try something new! I promise you'll love it.

Sounds Like: The Knife, Jeans Wilder, Talking Heads

DOWNLOAD: Aa – Mossy

"Mossy" is the b-side to "Glow Wreath," which we premiered in December. Together they make up a limited 12-inch called "Glossy" (get it?) that Aa was selling on a recent European tour. They differ in tone–"Mossy" playing craggy basscave to "Glow Wreath"'s ascendant magic carpet ride–but both are packing beastliness in the drumming department. Anyway, now you've got the full pairing.

DOWNLOAD: Drink Up Buttercup – Young Ladies

It would be weird to not mention how much this new Drink Up Buttercup song recalls the Beatles. That's not meant as a slight, it's just too obvious when the harpsichords and pianos twinkle in, daintily passing from major chord to minor chord, backing a voice that sounds like it's been inflated with reverb. Born And Thrown On The Hook–their new LP for Yep Roc–arrives on March 23.

DOWNLOAD: High Places – On Giving Up

So, High Places left Brooklyn for California. This much we knew. What we didn't know was if and how that move would effect their amorphous, swimming-in-the-Aurora-Borealis sound. That is, until we heard "On Giving Up," which aside from being the most straightforward High Places song we've ever heard, is a jam and a half. You can actually dance to it in a non noodle-like fashion! And it will probably sound really good in your car (or anywhere else)! Just push that downward-facing arrow button already. High Places Vs. Mankind is out on April 6 via Thrill Jockey.

EXCLUSIVE NEW DOWNLOAD: Sometime – Optimal Ending (Redd Lights + FM Belfast Remixes)

(Photo: Kl+ªngur)

Discovering music is an incestuous thing—we first stumbled upon Sometime’s velveteen vocals via Steed Lord’s needling amps, whom we found were (and still are) paling around with Crookers. Now the Nordic electropopsters are back, just in time for a big, fat, wet snowstorm. They’re from Iceland—they don’t even notice! But they’ve brought some toasty, noggy remixes by Redd Lights and FM Belfast to warm our bones anyhow. Totally different tweaks below—one almost Timbaland-esque, the other more rambling trance. Both can be found on the new single Optimal Ending and bought digitally on iTunes or gogoyoko.
